Counseling for Families

Problems in your family can affect all areas of family members' lives. Behavioral or emotional problems in children are one of the most common reasons to visit a family therapist. A child’s problems do not exist in a vacuum; they exist, and will likely need to be addressed, within the context of the family.

When it feels like the issues in your family are too big for you to handle -- and aren't getting better -- it may be time to see a family therapist.

Common Family Struggles

  • A child is having with school, peers, or substance use

  • A major trauma or change that impacts the entire family (i.e. relocation to a new house, natural disaster, incarceration of a family member)

  • An unexpected or traumatic loss of a family member

  • An adjustment to a new family member in the home (i.e. birth of a sibling, adoption, foster children, a grandparent entering the home)

How Can Family Counseling Help?

  • Creating Honesty and Trust

  • Helping Facilitate Forgiveness

  • Developing a Supportive Family Environment

  • Improving Communication

  • Developing Empathy and Understanding

  • Reducing Conflict and Tension by Improving Problem Solving and Anger Management Skills

What Family Counseling Cannot Do

While many people find family therapy extremely helpful in their time of need, it is not a magic pill. It cannot repair all problems. It cannot force a difficult family member to change or grow. What it can do, however, is help you understand the situation better, decide what you are willing to do to improve the situation, and learn how to cope the best way possible.

If your family is struggling, don’t wait to seek out the support and guidance of a trained family counselor. At Avenues of Counseling and Mediation we have multiple providers in both our Medina and Akron office, just waiting to connect with you and help your family through this challenging time.
