Kim Metz, PhD, Clinical Psychologist

My name is Kim Metz and I am a Clinical Psychologist. I have a Ph.D. from Ohio University and have experience in counseling children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. In addition, I am a Professor at Walsh University. Among other things, I educate students about human development, addictions, group processes, and introductory psychology.  My approach to therapy is eclectic which means that depending on the client and the presenting issue, I may pull from various approaches. However, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the modality that I emphasize the most. CBT asserts that we cannot easily control people or events around us but we can work to control our responses to those people and events. So CBT will help you change your negative thought patterns and behaviors and increase your coping skills. It and an offshoot of it called Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), have a good deal of scientific research pointing to their effectiveness - especially for those that struggle with anxiety or depression.

While I work with individuals and families with a variety of different mental health or substance concerns, I have a particular interest in children, adolescents and adults with depression and anxiety, in children and adolescents with behavior issues, and in adolescents and young adults who are struggling with all the choices involved in moving into early adulthood. I have engaged in both psychotherapy and teaching for about 25 years (15 years at Avenues) and I believe that my clinical and teaching experiences are invigorating compliments to each other. I truly enjoy that my careers allow me to meaningfully connect with so many different people.
