EMDR Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy method developed by Francine Shapiro in 1989 and is one the most researched therapeutic methods. EMDR has been proven to be an effective method to aid in recovery from trauma or distress events in one’s life.
“EMDR therapy helps the brain process these memories and allows normal healing to resume. The experience is still remembered, but the fight, flight, or freeze response from the original event is resolved (EMDRIA).” When the fight, flight and freeze responses weaken, this allows for a shift in negative to positive beliefs about oneself.
EMDR utilizes Bilateral Stimulation (BLS), which is a visual, auditory, or tactile external method, going from a side to side pattern, stimulating both sides of the brain. BLS assist the client in processing worries, fears, traumas or future problems by activating the memory to the working memory and through the back and forth pattern, reduces the emotional charge of the memory.
