Depression During the Holidays
For many people, the holidays can be a drag. Though typically considered a joyful time, there can be so many stressors that can ruin the fun. Worrying about gatherings, meals, family, and presents can all put a strain on our minds.
What is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)?
You may have heard the term “Seasonal Affective Disorder” or SAD. Someone who experiences SAD tends to have significant mood changes or depression that follows the changing of the seasons, usually from warmer seasons to cooler ones. It makes sense because we know that certain times of the year bring different connotations. For example, in summer we think of being carefree and relaxed, and in winter we deal with colder temps, less sunlight and the hectic holidays that sometimes cause stress.
Tips for Dealing With Seasonal Depression
Well, how do we deal with this feeling of depression during a crucial time of the year? There are many options, but these can be the most effective:
Seek counseling beforehand to learn tools to cope better
Engage in your favorite activities around this time to keep yourself relaxed and healthy
Don’t be afraid to shift some of your seasonal workloads on someone close to you (partner, parents, etc.) to help if you’re spread too thin
Start planning earlier to avoid the stress of last-minute gifts, meals, and gatherings
These things will not get rid of SAD all together, but reducing the amount of stress you have can make it much easier to manage. And as the saying goes, if you take care of yourself, you can take care of those around you. Seek out the guidance of a depression counselor when you need it. Avenues of Counseling and Mediation has depression counselors available in both our Medina and Akron, Ohio locations.
