Mary Butler, MA, LPCC

My name is Mary Butler and I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor. I received my Master’s of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpentaria, California. I am a member of the American Counseling Association, International Association of Trauma Professionals, Jung Cleveland, and Jung Utah. I have a certification as a health coach through Iowa Chronic Care Consortium. Additionally, I received training in Terry Real’s Relational Life Therapy.

The causes of our suffering are woven into the fabric of our lives. My approach to therapy is grounded in Depth Psychology, which is an approach that seeks to slow down the internal noise and automatic response to life and ask questions. A Depth approach is interwoven into my conversations with clients about their problems and their day-to-day experiences as we work to uncover larger themes and patterns. A depth approach is present-focused and strength-based. Depth psychotherapy invites an ongoing conversation about your inner world in relation to your current challenges. This awareness provides not only symptomatic relief but also an opportunity for greater meaning and transformative change. Other modalities incorporated into this approach include dreamwork, expressive arts, active imagination, and writing.

My practice is inclusive of clients from all walks of life from college age to the elderly. My clinical interests include anxiety, depression, depth work, trauma/attachment, spirituality, life transitions, loss, and grief, coping with illness, and couples.

As a passionate lifelong learner, I have been immersed in the study and intersection of trauma from a depth psychological perspective for 15 years through analysis, reading, conferences, and various training. This personal and professional pursuit has included an exploration of the inner symbolic world of the unconscious – including dreams, fantasies, and imagination, as well as attachment and body-based modalities and expressive arts. Additionally, prior to my work as a therapist, I was a registered nurse in a variety of settings.
