Why Choose a Career Assessment?
Did you know that you will likely spend over 80,000 hours of your life working? Where you work and what you do during your time at work plays a dramatic part in your mental health. With thousands of career choices, majors, and specialties to choose from it is no wonder so many people feel lost and overwhelmed with making decisions.
Choosing a career involves self-reflection. We want a career to feel congruent with one’s personality, values, interests, educational goals, and lifestyle. This task is too frequently overlooked when making such personal decisions. Doing career assessments and engaging in self-reflection can help individuals make positive career moves, choose a major, and reside happily in a career. Think about how costly one year of college is when experimenting with a variety of majors! Unfortunately, a large portion of the population enrolls in courses and chooses majors based on little knowledge of themselves or the career options available.
It’s never too late to find your own path. While we so often search for the perfect career, I have found it helpful to look at choosing a career differently. We want to look at tasks one is good at and interested in. We want to look at values, as you likely don’t want to do tasks incongruent with your personal values. We look at education-how much education are you willing to receive in order to do the tasks you are interested in. Some other aspects we look at include desired lifestyle such as salary, work hours, and relationships with others. From identifying what makes up your career, we can find careers that match you!
