Stress in Children & Tips for Parents

It may not always be easy to recognize stress in children, but signs are there and it’s important for parents to recognize them and respond appropriately.

  • Frequent self-doubt, self-critical statements

  • Physical problems such as headaches, stomach aches, and fatigue

  • Irritability

  • Restlessness, difficulty concentrating or relaxing

  • Refusal/reluctance to attend school or other activities

  • Sleep problems such as waking up feeling unrested, trouble falling asleep or staying asleep

Tips for Parents

  1. Fear and anxiety are sometimes learned behavior. Be careful not to pass your fears along to your children.

  2. Work jointly as parents, even if you’re divorced. Agree about how you will help your child. Talk with your children about their worries.

  3. Don’t confuse anxiety/worry with inappropriate behavior. Punishing worry will not stop it.

  4. Let your child know all their feelings are ok, and that they can always talk to you about them.

  5. Build self-confidence in your child by identifying their strengths, giving them important things to do at home, praising them, and helping them become independent.

  6. Keep your expectations of your child fair and realistic.

  7. Learn about anxiety/worry in children.

  8. Seek professional help for your child when worry is affecting their daily functioning.
