Reiki/Energy Healing

What is Reiki?

By definition, Reiki (ˈrākē), sometimes known as energy healing, is a technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being.  It is known to reduce stress and promote mental healing.  People can be skeptical of it since it is a form of holistic medicine, or alternative medicine, but it is a technique that has been used since 1922 in Japan by Buddhist Mikao Usui.  Since then, it has been adapted to fit various cultures around the world.

Does Reiki Really Work?

Some effects of Reiki are measurable, such as improved heart rate and blood pressure. However, the effects that are not physical are much harder to measure, such as higher empowerment or self esteem. The only way to really tell from that side of the spectrum is from anecdotes. There are many patients that after receiving reiki are much more compliant and overall more in touch with themselves.

According to the University of Minnesota, “Another obstacle to Reiki research is the inability of contemporary technology to document the existence of the biofield, much less study its makeup or measure changes in it. Superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) measure extremely small magnetic fields and may in the future prove useful to this study. The speed with which technological advances are being made may mean that the needed technology is on the brink of development. However, it is also possible that Reiki or biofields lie outside the bioelectromagnetic spectrum.

Fortunately, it is not necessary for science to document the existence of either Reiki or the biofield in order to measure the impact of Reiki on the human system (aspirin was used for 70 years before science began to understand how it works). Although some effects of Reiki are measurable, such as improved heart rate and blood pressure, many commonly reported benefits of repeated Reiki sessions, such as a sense of spiritual connection and enhanced self-esteem, may not be quantifiable. It is still important to document these reported benefits.

Patients who feel more spiritually connected and who simply feel better about themselves may well be patients who are easier to treat and who are better equipped to follow treatment protocols. In this way, Reiki might be shown to significantly, albeit indirectly, impact medical outcomes by supporting the ability of patients to access conventional medicine and gain a heightened awareness of their own needs.”

“Reiki is the use of life force energy to allow the body to relax and allow its own healing power to work. You are fully aware but also relaxed while simply laying fully clothed on a table or sitting in a chair. I have been a Reiki Master for about 20 years and have found it to be a wonderful addition to all the ways I take care of myself. It is similar to some other ways of relaxing in that Reiki can leave the person actually feeling more energized the next day and the days after. I encourage anyone interested to give me a call, I love to answer questions!”

It also affects the entire family and supportive network. Counseling and support have to be offered to all affected by the change or illness. Emotional healing is integral in moving forward to a new normal and getting back to one’s life. Supportive group work also allows clients to feel they are not alone in their journey. Anmarie is interested in starting groups which focus on caring for the caregiver, how cancer can become a communication barrier, loss of self, the next step after becoming a survivor.

“Reiki is truly beneficial to those with chronic illness and pain…i have worked with cancer patients with reiki. It decreases anxiety and emotional stress. As the stress decreases the body finds itself in a centered balanced state of peace and allignment. This in turn promotes healing. Currently i am a reiki 2 practioner working on last phase in becoming a master. Work with it daily. I have found it to lower blood pressure to allow treatment to continue, alleviate headaches, chronic pain from lupus and assist in anxiety.”
