Dr. Kristen Knepp earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Tech. She completed her predoctoral internship at Cleveland State University. She has experience delivering cognitive-behavioral treatments for weight management and obesity in a variety of settings, including university counseling centers, private practice, and medical centers. Dr. Knepp utilizes principles of health education and behavioral modification in her work with clients. She also specializes in treating anxiety, depression, phobias, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), relationship issues on an individual basis, grief issues and ADHD in adults.
Due to her interest and experience in weight management, Dr. Knepp is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Nutrition at Kent State University. Dr. Knepp takes a holistic approach to wellness and believes that physical and mental health are strongly interconnected. She has experience in the evaluation and treatment of adult ADHD. Other areas of specialization are working with young adults and college students on identity and career issues, anxiety disorders, and stress management.
Her orientation is primarily cognitive-behavioral. In other words, she encourages clients to act as scientists to explore any negative thought patterns and their effects on feelings and behavior, and to test out new ways of thinking that might be more helpful and adaptive. In her weight management work, Dr. Knepp also uses behavioral methods, such as goal-setting, rearranging one’s environment, and self-monitoring. Additionally, she is trained in motivational interviewing, helping clients to resolve any ambivalent feelings they have about making changes to their lifestyle, and helping them to develop internal motivation to achieve their goals.
