Mary Butler, MA, LPC

Biography: I received a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute in California. The degree’s emphasis was in Marriage and Family Therapy, Professional Clinical Counseling and Depth Psychology. I am licensed by the state of Ohio as a Professional Counselor. I have worked in various community mental health settings to provide counseling services with clients experiencing a wide range of issues. My treatment approach is eclectic. I will draw from a variety of therapeutic modalities to best serve your unique needs—including strengths based, solution focused and cognitive behavioral. The underlying foundation for my therapy practice encompasses a depth psychological approach.

A depth approach encourages a deepened understanding of yourself, your symptoms and your habituated patterns. From a depth perspective our work together is to discover the nature of your suffering and invite a sense of curiosity with which to understand yourself, your relationship to your current symptoms as well as an awareness of longstanding patterns that may no longer serve you. My intention is to create a collaborative space that feels safe to honor and listen to the inherent wisdom that is your own. The therapy hour often becomes a time to re-center oneself—an opportunity to slow down and turn inward. This turning inward offers insight and the development not only of inner resources but also a potential to know yourself more fully that allows for a renewed sense of options, meaning, vitality and transformative change.

My treatment approach with couples draws from well established modalities that provide collaborative methods for us to explore problematic relational dynamics, including high conflict, infidelity, lack of desire, sex addiction, life transitions/stages. My primary areas of clinical interest include anxiety, depression, childhood/developmental trauma and attachment issues, PTSD, marital conflict, grief/loss, and life transitions.

I am a member of the American Counseling Association, International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals, Jung Cleveland and Jung Society of Utah. I am currently pursuing additional training in Terry Real’s Relational Life Therapy (for couples) and am a member of Sessions with Esther Perel – a stimulating online educational community for couples therapists.

As a passionate lifelong learner, I have been immersed in the study and intersection of trauma from a depth psychological perspective for 15 years through analysis, reading, conferences and various trainings. This personal and professional pursuit has included an exploration of the inner symbolic world of the unconscious – including dreams, fantasies, and imagination, as well as attachment and body based modalities and expressive arts. I received certification as a health coach through Iowa Chronic Care Consortium. Additionally, prior to my work as a therapist, I was a registered nurse in a variety of settings.
